Slam, Bam, Thank You Ma’am

Monday 24th October, 7:30pm. Riverside Bar.

Following our previous post on the rather fabulous LaDIYfest we thought we should tell you about this equally fabulous event in the run up. Now Then 2010 poetry slam champion Sarah Thomasin brings you ‘Slam, Bam, Thank You Ma’am’; raising money for Sheffield Rape Crisis Centre and featuring an all-female poetry slam. Sheffield’s finest lady wordsmiths will battle it out to be crowned the Grande Dame of Slam – we can’t wait!
Headlining the evening will be Paula Varjack and we’re very excited to be seeing a world-class poet during her debut UK tour in our own Steel City. Not only that, but Paula is donating her time in support of the cause.

Enough from us though – this is what Sarah has to say about it all:
“I was inspired to organise Slam, Bam Thank You Ma’am by LaDIYfest Sheffield’s commitment to the celebration of women with an emphasis on the artistic, the creative and the political. Sheffield has a rich and vibrant spoken word scene, with some exciting emerging talent. However, there is a tendency for the scene to be quite male.
Not because women are not made welcome at the many Sheffield events – we certainly are – but because I believe, women in our society are discouraged from performing, from having confidence in their creativity, from ‘showing off’. I’ve heard of the best female poets on the scene prefacing their work with ‘I’m sorry, this isn’t very good’ or simply not performing their poetry at all. Slam, Bam Thank You Ma’am will provide an opportunity for women to compete without feeling like the ‘token girl’.”
Hells yes. Get yourselves down to the Riverside Bar at 7:30pm on Monday 24th October.
