The Leadmill is the much-loved mainstay of Sheffield’s independent music institutions, and this August it’s bringing Hacienda Classical to Don Valley in a weekend full of music. Led by original Hacienda DJ’s Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, a 70-piece classical orchestra will play its third new set of experimental acid house music for their crazed and devoted audience, at one of Sheffield’s best outdoor music venues.
Financed by the highly influential New Order back in the 80s and early 90s, The Hacienda was and still is (despite closing over 20 years ago) the best known club in Manchester, pioneering the rise of house and rave music in the city. Now with added classical instruments including trombones, violins and trumpets, the hugely successful Hacienda Classical will bring a new set of fresh soundtracks to the Steel City.
Having taken a coach-load of Leadmill ravers to Manchester in 1988, the concert won’t be the first time The Leadmill and The Hacienda have met, and hopefully it won’t be the last. This event promises to bring the nostalgia of classic nights like Hot and Rise & Steamer, as well as remembering the birth of Gatecrasher in Sheffield.
The Hacienda’s new and refreshed dance classics have been met with unbridled joy by fans, and in the last two years the orchestra has performed at over 25 venues to over 150,000 people. Now with veteran DJ duo Park and Pickering back together, this event will no doubt be a sell-out so get your tickets, quick.
And as if that isn’t enough, George Ezra is the second artist to be confirmed for the weekend at Don Valley. Having played two sell-out shows at The Leadmill back in 2014, the 24-year-old Bristolian will be making his return to Sheffield after a truly stunning rise to success in the last 18 months. Often compared to blues and folk singers Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, Ezra’s compelling and powerful vocals will no-doubt be met with thousands of returning Sheffield fans.
