Festival of Debate is a non-partisan city-wide programme of events that asks us to explore the most important social, economic, environmental and political issues of the day.

Festival of Debate is coordinated by not-for-profit company Opus Independents in collaboration with over 40 partner organisations across the city. 2019’s programme will take place from the 19th April, through May to the 5th June and will feature over 70 events of all shapes and sizes. These include panel discussions, debates, Q&As, artistic responses, keynote speeches and other public events in Sheffield.

This year’s Festival Strands are Who We Are, Living Together, Our Democracy, Our Planet and Looking Forward.

Since its launch in the lead-up to the General Election of 2015, Festival of Debate has hosted high-profile figures including Yanis Varoufakis, Ed Milliband, George Monbiot, Shami Chakrabarti, Owen Jones, James O’Brien, Paul Mason, Akala, John Pilger, Roger McGough, Bridget Christie, The Guilty Feminist, Steve Bell, Prof David Nutt, Nick Clegg and Grayson Perry.

Previous partners include: The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University,  Sheffield City Council, New Economics Foundation, Museums Sheffield, Diem25, UBI Lab Sheffield, Voluntary Action Sheffield and the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures.
