Frozac Shoes Off Party: 20 March @ Broomhall Centre

When I found out about the FroZac Shoes Off Party I couldn’t believe what I was reading. The event was describing my idea of a perfect chilled Saturday night out in aid of a worthy cause.

Arriving at the Broomhall Centre with some friends, I paid the £5 entry and was given a meal voucher. Ludicrously, I’d never been to a FroZac night before so I didn’t really know what to expect. It was like walking into a chilled tent at a festival. After taking my shoes off I absorbed the sights, sounds and smells. The walls and ceiling had been decorated with colourful throws, an array of different sized cushions were scattered across the floor and groovy downtempo beats were playing.

Purposely not having eaten dinner I padded over to the wonderful smells coming from the Treats and Beats Cafe. I traded my meal voucher for a marvellous plate of curry and after finding the comfiest pile of cushions I settled down to excite my taste buds.

The evening’s main point of focus was to raise awareness for World Water Day on March 22nd and collect donations for Water Aid. Due to technical difficulties the sound on the short film about water could not be heard, but the imagery alone was enough to emphasise the global water issues and how much we take clean drinking water for granted.

The musical highlight of the evening was a live set from Sangat, a virtuoso pairing of sitar and tabla. I’d never seen either of the instruments played live before and the two musicians were incredibly talented. They moved their hands so quickly and made complicated rhythms look easy. Being full of curry, incredibly comfortable and surrounded by a room full of happy smiling faces, I was captivated as soon as they started playing. Completely entranced, I was left feeling like my body and soul had been nourished.

Feeling a bit too relaxed, I got a cup of coffee and a slice of the best homemade cake I’d had in ages. The evening wound down with some psychedelic ambient tunes which rounded things off perfectly.

All my senses had been stimulated and I was left feeling very positive and inspired. Definitely the best fiver I’d spent on a night out all year. Go team FroZac.
