Club Utopia

A new club night ‘Club Utopia’ (next one on July 1st), is attempting to offer an alternative to commercial ‘indie’ nights and venues which crank up Oasis and The Smiths, ply you with cheap booze (Ok that’s not so bad), play ‘I am the Resurrection’ then kick you out. Here’s the nitty-gritty:

Doors: Open at 10pm and close at 3.30am.
Price: £3
Music: Motown / Northern Soul / Britpop / Indie
Date: July 1st
Venue: The Harley

The organisers had this to say:

“Club Utopia is an independent night at The Harley showcasing the best in British rock ‘n’ roll for the people of Sheffield. This night is a much needed stand against the rise in commercial venues that assume that the alternative scene want to hear ‘This Charming Man’ and ‘Wonderwall’ played week in and week out.

The rising popularity of Dub, Dub-Step and Breaks in Sheffield also means that opportunities to listen to guitar-based music are few and far between, forcing Brighton Beach at the O2 Academy to hold the reigns and guide the Sheffield people into a false idea of what rock ‘n’ roll is really about.

There is a night out there that still praises the likes of Cast, The Music and the Spencer Davis Group, alongside Motown and Northern Soul.”

We’re guessing if they’re this passionate about the music, this has to be a good night.
