How Do Magazine / Varsity Poetry Slam

Big thanks to all who came and performed at our events in Bradford and Sheffield last month. We had a great time with the How Do magazine lot at The Polish club in Bradford, if you haven’t heard of it it’s a Bradford based free publication along the same line as Now Then Magazine. With featured sets from Richard Tyrone Jones, Emma Decent, and Stan Skinny and a wide variety of open mic acts including Jane Steele, the creative writing editor of How Do, it was a great night showcasing the diversity of talent in the region.

The following night saw us back in Sheffield, with the Varsity Poetry Slam where Sheffield Hallam students took on Sheffield University. It was a close run affair, with some memorable performances from both teams. Jack Mann’s opening poem set the tone very competitive with an opening roast of Hallam Uni’s reputation but Adderson came right back at him with a high scoring poem about the right to anyone for a good education. The highest scoring poet of the night was Chella Quint, who gave a confident performance (beer bottle in hand) of some great comic material. Hallam won it this time, we’ll be back for another Varsity Slam in Winter, so watch this space for more information.

We’re back in Bradford on Friday 20th, and Sheffield 21st with some more great poetry and music, this time featured by Word Life co-founder Kayo Chingonyi. More details tba soon.
